Vintage

This weeks inspiration was vintage. Well I was soo excited, obviously my first reaction was to take some new shots of all my lovely vintage clutter. You see, while I live in a modern beach house it has bit of a vintage hint to the decor.

I am working on a little project involving some vintage photos, and the more I thought about my love of all things vintage at the heart of that love is the memories and the history to these vintage things. The special memories that attach to them, where they have a personal history to me, or just the idea of someone else enjoying the item many many years ago when the world was a very different place. It is the character of that use, that enjoyment and love that makes vintage items so appealing to me.

So I settled on vintage photos rather than taking a photo. Kind of not the point I know!

Vintage photos capture the history of special moments, the "every day" to  every day events precisely.

I choose the above image, because it is so beautiful. Beautiful in the sense that it has clearly been cherished over the years.  It has not been hidden away in some musty old album but dragged around and moved from frame to frame over the years. It has been enjoyed.

P.S Does anyone have any tips for restoring vintage photos that have been well loved like the one above? I  own photoshop. If any one has any experiences or knowledge using that tool in particular I would really appreciate the help  xox

Beautiful photo and what a story those little girls must have to tell. I love old photos to and it really brings you back to a much more simpler time.

Oh, I just love this. What a sweet photo. I would guess early 1960's. I love the shoes, the hair. I so enjoyed your story and the mention of your project. Beautiful!!

This photo is beautiful! I am guessing the girls are sister, the older one looks to be looking after the smaller one. Not sure how to restore, but it is lovely even in this condition...

Oh I just adore this photo.. and just like you .. all vintage photos.. I have a collection of family photos which I really should blog more often... I have once restored a family photo that had a crease running through it.. [see my Anzac Day post] It was mostly a matter of patience... Have you used the clone tool before? this is what I do for something like this.. just clone a patch close to the area you are working on.. and slowly slowly fill in the gaps.. best to blow the view up as big as you can... you end up working at 1-2px so have to swap back to screen view now and then to see the result...

My brother restored a photo for his inlaws and I was gobsmacked at the result.. he has more patience than me.. and he actually is an artist.. hehe.. Have fun with it... xxx Julie

thanks for lovely comments too!!! we do seem to like similar things!!

My boy is restoring some very old pics of my grandparents with my grandmother's family. I think they are from the 1940's or 1950's...and it took a long time to even do one. And yes, he's using Photoshop.

My husband has been doing some photos for his parents; I think he uses the healing brush as well as the clone.

This is such a sweet vintage photo. I see Julie gave you some great tips about restoring the photo using photoshop. It takes a lot of time and you do need a lot of patience. It can also be fun and a little addicting! Thank you for your kind comments on my blog; I love hearing what everyone likes and what I should paint more of. It looks like the vintage women won! This is such a beautiful photo! I'm always drawn to old photos ... love the subtle variations in their colour. As someone mentioned above, the restoration process requires a lot of patience but it's worth it! I use the clone tool as well. Good luck! I hope you'll post an "after" picture!
